This laptop is operating under Kernel version [2.6.30-bpo.1-686]
Basic Installation of [Debian]:
Dual boot with Windows VISTA. GRUB installed.
Initial version from Linux Magazin DVD; after that upgrades from internet.
Preparation (study) of dual boot installation on laptop with pre-installed Windows Vista took considerable time, also due to being a Linux newbie
Setting up additional features for [Debian]:
Installation of graphical NVIDIA driver should be easier. The default driver simply does not perform sufficiently for applications like Google Earth. With NVIDIA's driver Google Earth runs smoothly.
Making wireless networking to operate should be easier. For wireless networking to increase security (WPA PSK TKIP) needed to install: wpasupplicant.
Sound quality under Linux is rather poor compared to Vista with special drivers for Dolby Home Theatre
Unresolved issues
Sound on headphones currently does not work.
Configuration Files
I should have a look at the power settings, but haven't found time for that. This laptop with dual 500 GB harddisks, and 17 inch screen does only 1.5 hours on the battery pack (6 cells Lithiumion). Some newer Acer models can have 8 cells.
Laptop impressions:
On the left and right side of the laptop there are two USB 2.0 ports. The two USB ports are positioned too close to each other, causing problems when trying to use both USB-ports at the same time. Even a newly bought rather narrow USB memory stick could not be inserted next to an USB-mouse plug ... This in fact reduces the number of usable USB-ports down to 2, or one needs to trim the width of the USB-plugs.
Initially I was afraid the display would glare too much, but it appears OK.
Debian Linux impression:
Realising a dual boot, installing NVIDIA's driver and making wireless networking to work properly en securely took much more time than anticipated. I am not an admin, just a user. With Linux running as it does now: quite happy.
