I have looked through the guide (http://www.jjcc.com/articles/howtos/Emachines-M5310-Linux.jsp)
on this site for installing Gentoo linux on the afore mentioned laptop. I have tried 3 times to install and each time I get "install Failed" Is there anyone outthere willing to walk me through the process, I have read through the install guide laid out on the gentoo site more than once. I can't seem to figure out what I am doing wrong. I am starting to get frustrated. according to this (http://www.jjcc.com/articles/howtos/Emachines-M5310-Linux.jsp) there are a few extra steps I need to take that I don't quite understand either. I guess what I need is some in depth help from someone willing to mentor me in this OS. Please help I won't give up on this project, but I do need some help.

I say opt for an easier route

Mepis is an excellent distro. Download from http://www.mepis.org
See http://www.mepisguides.com http://www.mepislovers-wiki.org/
Post to http://www.mepislovers.org -- great forum

Mepis is both a live CD and an install CD so you can try it first.

You may need to use ndiswrapper or Linuxant driverloader for the Broadcom wireless card.

===>>>Get this laptop to boot Mepis by going into the bios -> System Settings / Advanced / Disable Legacy USB support. This way you avoid the need for a custom kernel.

If you really want Gentoo you can download Kororaa from http://www.kororaa.org -- this is Gentoo with a much easier installer
You will probably need a torrent to get Kororaa -- it's been very popular lately and the download sites don't always work. Get the install .iso and packages for the beta-r1 -- not the live CD.
