Hello All
First of all, I am not a tech type and I know some Linux users do not think much of Linspire but it works fairly well for me. I am only looking for an operating system that will be able to keep me from having to go from 98 to XP in the future. I have had a Linspire desktop with drive trays (different distros) for three years.
I recently bought a Linspire Laptop with Linspire 5.0.347 from GigaBytes Network.
http://www.linspirenetwork.com/Store/Laptops.htm
I cannot find a model number but I have included a link. They use to have a higher priced model but recently the link disappeared. I hope they are not going out of business as I have a one-year limited warranty. This is the first time I have seen a machine with no maker or model information.
I guess it is ok but I missed the fact that it does not have a pcmcia slot as I bought at the same time a card to permit Firewire connection with an external Firewire external hd.
The machine booted up to my cable modem network just fine using cat5. When I went to wireless I found out that I have to reboot two to five times to get a network connection with my linksys 802b wireless router. I always have a very good signal, My stepson with a xp laptop in the same room connects everytime, the first time. GigaBytes Network or Linspire forums have been no help. What I usually get is try this, try that. One suggested that Linspire was not a good fit for me. I will not tell you what os they suggested. It was an insult is all I will say.
I tried to view a DVD movie and the software told me I need DVD player software that was supposed to be included IN the laptop. I downloaded a DVD player from Linspire CNR, which I have a subscription with.
As usual the laptop would not print to a HP3322 DeskJet printer, though Linspire did see it. I found out this is normal with other Linux distros also.
The machine recognizes my USB thumbdrive, USB media reader, USB trackball/optical mouse, USB Canon Power shot A70 camera and all my files from my 98 computer.
For what it is worth, here is my story.
Cheers
